The story of Dukey
began at the yearling sales in October 2005, when Colin Harris decided
that he had to have "A Danehill". As this was his last crop to come on
the market and with Danehill being the top sire forever, this was not
going to be an easy exercise without very long pockets! Paul dutifully
looked all through the offerings at Tattersalls and got it down to a
shortlist. One of the horses Paul liked, Colin did not get there in time
to see and they bid on some very high priced ones and then along came
this gawky bay colt out of a Sadler's Wells mare. They duly bought him
for 55,000 guineas and the consensus of opinion was that if he ever grew
into his head, he would be a nice horse! Very quickly named SIR DUKE by
Colin after the Stevie Wonder song, he proved a real boy to break in and
ride and his faithful lad Kipper Stead, who is one of the best riders in
Newmarket, was frequently dumped on the Heath. This was something he
never really grew out of! Dukey had one run as a two year old at
Newmarket when he spent the entire time shouting at the others and came
in a very long last! After this, it was decided that he must become a
gelding to which Colin reluctantly agreed, seeing his 2008 Derby entry
go out of the window. Dukey ran as a three year old, winning two and
being placed several times, but he really came into his own this year.
He spent time in the winter with Tik Saunders in Northamptonshire,
turned out in the field and came back much more the finished article. He
won on his first outing at the inaugural Great Leighs meeting, followed
by four more wins and two seconds and one third, all his runs this year.
